2025 | Wall Graphic & Illustration | Me Kong Cha Chaan Teng
We created a series of illustrations and wall graphics for Me Kong, a Hongkongese Cha Chaan Teng café in Reading, UK.
The project features a set of ten illustrations integrated across the restaurant’s interior walls and menus. Developed in conversation with the cafe owner, the visual concept aims to create a dining environment that feels warm and familiar, while connecting customers with shared memories of everyday life in Hong Kong.
The illustrations draw inspiration from Hong Kong popular culture across different generations, including television programmes, Cantopop music and classic Hong Kong movies. Several drawings reference iconic scenes from films by Stephen Chow, alongside musical influences such as Faye Wong. Through these references, the illustrations capture small cultural moments that many Hongkongers would recognise, and translate them into a visual language that supports the atmosphere of the cafe space.
Restaurant: Me Kong
Address: St Lawrence House, Ground and Lower Ground Floor, Abbey Square, Reading RG1 3AG
Wall Graphic & Illustrations: UUendy Lau
Logo & Branding: Hinz & Kunz
The illustration was also extended to Me Kong’s menu design and promotional screens.
Several additional drawings were created to highlight several signature Cha Chaan Teng dishes, including pineapple bun, baked pork chop on rice and claypot rice. The colour palette uses bold red and green tones aligned with the café’s brand identity, while also referencing everyday visual elements found in Hong Kong’s urban environment, such as minibus colour schemes and mosaic tiles commonly seen in Tong Lau buildings.
