2024 | Website Illustrations | Diaspora Explorer & Heritage Cultures

PROJECT BACKGROUND

We are invited by Diaspora Explorer to create a series of illustrations to be used on the project website and activity tools. All illustrations are inspired by participants’ experiences and activities organised for the local diaspora. More visuals are shown on the project site.

ABOUT VISUALS

Why Barn Swallows?

At the beginning of developing the visual assets, we discussed featuring a bird species that would complement the organisation’s existing logo and be consistently used throughout the website. I researched several urban birds (such as pigeons and sparrows), but eventually suggested barn swallows. Their behaviour and traits –perching frequently due to their small legs and rarely landing on the ground, and their habit of returning to the same wintering locality each year – resonate with the diaspora experience and with those who relocate yet maintain a deep connection to their homeland.

While some gather locally to form communities, others may depart and relocate to different places.
